TCU fans crowded around a popular tailgate.

As September rolls around, the greatest season of all approaches.
Football season. And because we live so close to Texas Christian University, a division I football school, we get to experience college gameday up close and personal. On game day, when you look near and around campus, all that is visible is a sea of purple. Everyone is decked out in their game day gear- jerseys, face paint, fan shirts and, of course, cowboy boots.

Although the beginning-of-September heat is killer, nothing stops dedicated TCU fans from carrying on their tailgating traditions. As you walk along, you see kids getting their face painted with purple footballs and butterflies, teens passing footballs with their friends, parents watching the game while grilling burgers and hotdogs, and fans cheering alongside the hundreds of others out there every Saturday. The tailgating scene is quite extraordinary. Fans go all out to have their ideal, perfect game day. While some rent RV’s and set up big flat screens with chairs lined up around them, others keep it casual and hang out in the back of pickup trucks simply enjoying the atmosphere.

College students gather around Amon G. Carter stadium and bring all they’ve got. Their love for feasting and fraternizing makes them prime additions to the tailgating scene. Their tailgates have long been described as “hotels without walls”. Noise complaints blow up security guards walkie talkies, but as the game goes on, the people only cheer louder and louder after every touchdown the Frogs make.

No matter the way you go about the tailgating scene, it continues to be an experience people of all backgrounds can connect through. The food, music and activities will forever be a way everyone comes together and enjoys the great game.
