5 Things Connor Has Taken In From The First 4 Weeks

#1: Week 4 done and more Texas Fun. Tom Herman is finally preaching his method down in Austin while up in Denton the North Texas Mean Green are soaring. UNT is 4-1 including a win over the Arkansas Razorbacks which was their first win over an SEC team in over 40 years. They’re coming off a 47-7 victory over Liberty giving up a season low 7 points. Before the game started there was a 42-minute lightning delay. Give me Liberty or give me lightning? Nah, give me UNT as the best team in the state of Texas.

#2: Big Who (Blue) Nation? That’s right. The Kentucky Wildcats are 5-0 and looking to be 6-0 for the first time since 1950 and are 3-0 in SEC play. Kentucky has beaten Florida, which ended a 31 game losing streak to the gators, as well as a victory over then #14 Mississippi State and holding the Bulldogs to 53 total yards of offense in the second half and 256 rushing yards below their SEC-leading average of 311 rushing yards per game, and beating South Carolina 24-10 and didn’t even have to score the second half to secure the victory. With these wins the Wildcats are now in the top 25 (#13) for the first time since 2007.

#3: The Scott Frost Bite. Nebraska is 0-4 making this the worst start since 1945. They weren’t even competitive against Michigan who proved that game was too big of a house for the Cornhuskers to win at. Nebraska was down 39-0 at halftime which was the largest halftime deficit they’ve faced since WW2. And the cornhuskers are coming off a loss to Purdue at home by two touchdowns. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as they have the nation’s most difficult road schedule which includes games against Wisconsin, Northwestern, Ohio State, and Iowa.

#4: BIG disappointment. The Big ten, especially the west division, looks pretty bad right now. Wisconsin and Iowa look okay. But I don’t know about the others. Purdue was boiling after an 0-3 start and the frustration was shown as they routed #23 Boston College 30-13. Nebraska is in a rebuilding year, Illinois will be Illinois, Northwestern is living up to the “Wild” part of their name (their name is the Wildcats), And I wouldn’t jump on P.J. Fleck’s boat at Minnesota right now either. Then from the East division, Ohio State and Penn State are legit but i don’t know about the michigan schools.

#5: Quarterback “issue” No problem. Alabama is TUAice(twice) as good as before. Not having Jalen isn’t seem to be “hurting” the Crimson Tide. Alabama seems to have adjusted to Tua Tagovailoa’s abilities. Though what’s new? They are the best year in and year out at adjusting to their skill set and developing players in order to execute what they need to to succeed. Alabama looks like they’re riding a different Tide than everybody else right now. Those elephants are stomping on their opponents.

Red River Rivalry

One of the greatest rivalries in college football history is taking place this weekend in Dallas, Texas. The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners meet up for the 89th consecutive year at the Cotton Bowl, a neutral site that sits halfway between Norman, Oklahoma and Austin, Texas. The first meeting was held in 1900, before either school had their nicknames, and seven years before Oklahoma became a US state. Texas leads the series 61-46-5, but, they have only won 6 of the last 18 matchups since 2000.

The Sooners won 29-24 last year, after jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the first two quarters of the game. Sam Ehlinger brought the Longhorns back into the game, throwing a touchdown pass and setting them up for a field goal before the end of the half. Texas carried this momentum into the second half, scoring 2 more touchdowns and taking a 24-23 lead. However, the Sooners’ defense made enough stops in the fourth quarter and the offense took advantage. Baker Mayfield threw for 302 yards, 2 tds, and 1 int completing 17/27 attempts, one of them being the game winning touchdown pass to Mark Andrews for 59 yards.

Sam Ehlinger looks to bring down the #7 ranked Sooners this year, after coming up just short in 2017. This year Oklahoma is without their Heisman winning quarterback, and turn to Kyler Murray, who has put up even greater stats than Baker Mayfield through the month of September. Texas is coming into the game ranked #19 in the nation, with one loss to Maryland, but convincing wins against TCU and USC in the last three weeks. This will be Oklahoma’s first legitimate test this year, and Texas will be the first ranked team they are playing this year.

Tom Herman lost to Oklahoma in his first year as Texas head coach, but upset the Sooners as Houston head coach back in 2016. Herman’s longhorns are coming in giving 6 points to Oklahoma, but Herman is well aware of the underdog roll and looks to upset the Sooners at the Cotton Bowl this weekend.
