A group of juniors at Paschal High School have started a new barbecue club that is quickly gaining attention among students. The club focuses on teaching the basics of barbecue while also bringing people together through food and shared interests.
The club was created by Brooks Benner(11), who said he wanted to give students a new way to get involved on campus. “I started it to help people at Paschal learn and get more involved with the Texas BBQ scene,” said Brooks.
While Brooks leads the club, he said he had some help getting it off the ground. “Luke Bozarth(11) helped, but mostly it was me,” he explained.
According to Brooks, his love for barbecue played a big role in starting the club. He described his inspiration as “the art of making barbecue and how anyone can learn it.” Through meetings and cooking sessions, members are learning that barbecue takes time, effort, and skill.
Students in the club have already begun trying different foods and techniques. When asked about his favorite dish so far, Brooks pointed to one clear winner. “Definitely my ribs,” he said. They even have dads and teachers who are requesting to come down to the club and try some of that delicious Texas high school barbecue. One of their most proud sponsors/collaborations is Paschal Younglife. Brooks says, “It just shows people are listening and our creation is making an impact.”
Although the club is still new, it has already created a space where students can connect, learn, and enjoy something different. As more students join, the barbecue club continues to grow, adding a new tradition to life at Paschal High School.
