Every spring, baseball teams from across North Texas (Fort Worth) gather for more than just competition. They come together to honor the life and legacy of Drew Medford through the annual Drew Medford Memorial Tournament. But Spring can be cruel and several games were cancelled this year due to rain; including the all important Arlington Heights/Paschal game.
Despite the rain, 29 teams were part of the 2026 Drew Medford and 29 lucky and talented baseball players were Drew Medford scholarship recipients.
Medford, a former standout at R.L. Paschal High School, was known for his strong leadership, work ethic, and the way he treated others. After his passing in 2016, his family, friends, and community created the tournament to make sure his impact would not be forgotten. Today, the event brings together dozens of high school teams and awards scholarships to players who show character, humility, and heart.
For many athletes, the tournament carries a deeper meaning than a typical series of games.
“It’s bigger than just baseball,” said Jackson Drake, a junior at Trinity Valley School. “You feel the purpose behind it. It makes you want to play hard but also respect everyone on the field.”
Players say the message of the tournament reminds them that success is not only measured by wins and losses, but by attitude and effort. Gill Penny, another junior from Trinity Valley School, said being part of the event changed his perspective. “It makes you think about the kind of teammate you are,” Gill said. “It’s about leadership and encouraging others. That’s what it means to be part of this.”
Each year, one player from every team is recognized with a scholarship for showing the same qualities Medford was known for and this year Paschal Senior Sebastian Pirie received the Paschal honor. Pirie plays shortstop for the Panthers and plans to attend college in Texas.
Coaches say this recognition motivates players to focus on integrity and teamwork throughout the season. As the tournament continues to grow, its purpose remains clear to honor a young athlete’s life by encouraging others to compete with passion, respect, and character. For the students who step onto the field each year, the Drew Medford Memorial Tournament is more than a tradition it is a reminder that one person’s legacy can still unite a community.
