The Paschal Panthers will take on the Arlington Heights Yellow Jackets this Friday night for the second time since the district realignment. After losing 28-23 in a nail-biter last season, the Panthers are looking to get revenge.
Paschal enters the matchup as underdogs with losses to Chisholm Trail, Saginaw, and O.D. Wyatt. Despite a disappointing 6-3 record, Paschal isn’t playing for much more than bragging rights. However, a win over their long-time rivals could spoil their district championship hopes.
Unlike other regular season games, Paschal vs Heights truly means more. After an 11-year hiatus from 2013-2023, the historic rivalry was revived and given the name “Battle of the Bonfire” as well as a new trophy. Since the two teams first met in 1922, the series has remained close as Paschal leads the all-time series 39-36-1. With a win on Friday night, the Panthers can extend their lead and bring the trophy home.
Going into this year’s matchup, players know how important this game is. “We have been very prepared and focused and are ready to get the job done. It would be a huge ending to the season, stopping Heights from winning a district championship, and it would send the seniors off on a high note,” says free safety Noah Dillon (11). “I don’t think I’ve ever been more ready to play a football game in my life,” said running back Truman Shelton (10) on what the rivalry means to him.
While Paschal has seen its struggles throughout the season, a win over Heights can erase them all. It all comes down to how well the Panthers can execute offensively as well as stop the run. For seniors playing their last game, there wouldn’t be a better way to end it than with a win. The game will be at 7:00 at Farrington Field and the Panthers need all the support they can get.
