Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you probably have heard of the video game Fortnite that could turn out to be a career for any student. If you are unaware of Fortnite, it is a battle royale game that starts with  100 players and the last person alive wins. Fortnite has become a part of pop culture, and as a result the best players have gained a massive following.

        The best Fortnite players can be found on the streaming service called Twitch. Twitch broadcasts gameplay live, so the public can watch at the same time. Twitch allows streamers to make a living based on a combination of views, subscribers, and donations. A fan can donate to their favorite streamer with either money or bits (Twitch Currency). The top Fortnite streamer averages around 15,000 to 110,000 concurrent viewers for the stream.  According to CNBC the the top Fortnite streamer, Ninja, makes around 500,000 dollars a month. Not every streamer makes this high of a salary, but they do make enough money to support themselves.

        The most popular Fortnite player is Tyler Blevins, who goes by the nickname Ninja. After a quick search on all his platforms, Ninja has amassed 11 million followers just on Twitch. In addition, he has 17 million followers on YouTube and 9.6 million followers on Instagram. Ninja broke the record for most concurrent views, with 628,000 views, when he played with Drake in March. Junior Nathan Moore says, “Ninja is my favorite streamer because he is funny and clean.”

        Fortnite is in the process of becoming a competitive game. The summer skirmish was the first step to meet this goal. Through these competitions Epic (company that owns Fortnite) was able to experiment with scoring and rules of the game. This is essential to making a game competitive because the game needs to be equal for all players, so it can resemble each player’s ability This means that in the near future Fortnite will be a part of E-sports. The first step process took place this summer with an eight week competition called the Summer Skirmish, which was broadcasted on Twitch. Over the eight weeks, 8 million dollars were given out to the top placing individuals. The competition was based on a point system, where it rewarded the amount of kills and how high the competitor placed. The finale of the competition wrapped up over Labor Day weekend. With the success of the Summer Skirmish, Fortnite has pledged 10 million dollars to a Fall Skirmish that will span over 6 weeks.
