Academy 4 is a non-profit mentorship organization based in Texas,
originally created to impact 4th grade students in financially disabled schools by providing them with a dedicated elder mentor for a one-on-one leadership connection.
In 2012, a group of members of St. Paul Lutheran Church wanted to leave a bigger impact on public schools, especially Daggett, an inner city school close to their church.
Over the course of several meetings with Daggett Elementary board, Academy 4 was formed, according to Academy 4’s website.
Academy 4 caters to 4th graders as it is a key development stage in children at their age, 4th graders are more open to listening to their elders, making it a prime time to make a difference in their education journey.
The program believes mentoring is the most effective tool to provide children with a greater sense of self worth, and a positive view of their future.
Paschal High school Juniors and Seniors are eligible for Academy 4. Earlier this month, many students visited various schools for the first meeting of this school year. Students would engage in lessons, and activities all while alongside their mentor.
Academy 4 allows for High School students to have the opportunity to mentor 4th grade students around Texas elementary schools. Academy 4 gathers together once a month to serve students for an hour and half, mentoring and connecting with one another.
When asked why she found it important to join Academy 4, Marylee Veloz (11) said, “I wanted to join Academy 4 because I love working with younger students, and supporting them in any aspect they need, I think its important for kids to have someone they can look up to and rely on.”
Academy 4 strives to build young leaders with the help of their mentors.
