It seems everywhere you turn — hallways, TikTok videos, Instagram captions — people are shouting “six seven!” But what does it even mean? This trend may seem strange, but it does have some interesting backstory to its origins.
The meme traces back to a rap song called “Doot Doot (6 7)” by artist Skrilla. In the song, the words “six seven” are repeated. On platforms like TikTok, edits of NBA player Lamelo Ball (who is 6 foot 7), were being created and spread like wildfire.
However, one video in particular made a noticeable difference in the popularity of the saying: Maverick Trevillian (AKA six seven kid). Maverick was on the sidelines of an AAU basketball game when the song Doot Doot by Skrilla came on. He shouted “Six seven!!” and the rest is history.
Now, the spread of the meme has reached every corner of every school in the nation, and when an unsuspecting math teacher happens to stumble upon the number 67, there will be a guaranteed response from the students.
Gabriel Garnet, a sophomore at Paschal, claims that his math teacher has fallen victim to this. Gabe remembers a moment from his Pre-Cal class: “ Ms. Ehrlich was teaching the class when she said ‘the value of the polynomial is 6/7.’ The class started jumping and hollering. One student even knocked over his desk and I could hear the walls reverberating. Ms. Ehrlich tried to calm the class down, but the power of the song was too strong, and the lyrics six seven was too much for her futile limbs. Finally, the class fever subsided but the air had a new taste and the static energy of 67 remained.”
Clearly, Gabriel’s story may be more dramatic than something you have experienced, but there is no doubt that when a teacher or fellow student says the words “67” that smirks will arise like the morning sun and cringey eye rolls will brush through the class like tumble weeds.
Although this trend seems silly, annoying even, these two numbers have been bringing exponential amounts of energy back to the classroom.
