On March 5th, Paschal High School’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS) took a deep dive into art history with a visit to the Dallas Modern Art Museum. The trip offered students an opportunity to explore contemporary works and engage with a retrospective exhibition of the renowned Venezuelan-American sculptor Marisol Escobar.

The exhibition, “Marisol: A Retrospective”, opened on February 23, 2023, following the departure of the Frida Kahlo exhibit, which returned to Mexico. This landmark showcase traces Escobar’s artistic evolution, highlighting her struggles with identity and her contributions to the Pop Art movement.

Guided through the museum, students viewed some of Escobar’s most famous sculptures, such “The Party” (1965-66), “Woman and Dog” (1964), and an array of of sketches and mixed-media pieces that reflect her unique artistic voice. The exhibition also delves into her early life, her rise to prominence in the New York art scene, and her travels between the United States and Europe, which influenced her work.

The NAHS members took time to appreciate every corner of the museum, discussing artistic techniques, historical context, and personal interpretations of Escobar’s work. The trip reinforced their shared passion for art and deepened their understanding of how creative expression can challenge societal norms and redefine identity.
The exhibit is at the Dallas Museum of Art until July 6th. Don’t miss it!
