The recent reopening of the Forest Park Miniature Railroad has drawn in many riders, old and new, to enjoy the experience of a ride around Trinity Park. In 1959, Bill Hames opened a miniature train in Fort Worth’s Trinity Park. At the time, Guinness World Records listed the train as the longest miniature railroad in the world, at around five miles long. “On opening day, over 1,500 people rode the train,” says the train’s website. It used only to cost 35 cents.
The train has been a tradition in Fort Worth since its opening, even drawing tourists visiting the city. It is especially popular among families with small children, who can enjoy the scenic ride around the park.
Today, the train chugs on in Trinity Park, winding along the river and giving riders a scenic view of the Trinity River and surrounding area. The train even crosses several bridges, allowing one to go over the river and take great pictures. Unfortunately for the train’s patrons, it closed in March 2022 when the former owner fell ill. It remained closed for over a year before finally reopening on August 31st, marking the return of a great piece of Fort Worth’s history.
Anyone interested in a relaxing ride through the park should hop on the train. Having ridden it, I can attest that it is worth the ride. In its entirety, the train lasts for nearly an hour and goes at a steady speed around different areas of the park. However, the ride is not for someone looking for an adrenaline rush; instead, it allows people to calmly take in the views of the river, the duck pond, some playgrounds, and the buildings and restaurants on the banks of the river. About halfway along the ride, the train stops at a concession stand, allowing visitors to purchase snacks and drinks.
Despite its miniature size, the train can still comfortably accommodate adults and children, allowing an exciting family outing to break up the daily routine. Children younger than two may board for free. Children from two to twelve years old and seniors older than 65 are $8. Children and adults 13 years old and up cost $10. Additionally, the train is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The train is a beautiful outing for families, friends, or those who want some time to themselves. The train offers a trip down memory lane for the thousands of people who have ridden the train. Ride the train, and you won’t regret it.
