The New Lunch Fuss
October 3, 2022
Lunch at Paschal, arguably one of the best times at Paschal for Juniors and Seniors, is a way for students to be able to escape the school and get something to eat from the various chains around the area. This option is a very popular one at Paschal as many students take this opportunity to leave and get lunch with their friends. Although this typical fashion of leaving to get food for lunch is very popular, a new mandate of requiring IDs to leave for lunch has added a “speed bump” for Paschal drivers leaving for lunch.
Beginning a few weeks ago, for Paschal students to leave the parking lot they must provide a physical Paschal ID, including the driver and all passengers. Students must leave through the gate that lets out directly to Berry, rather than the gate that goes through Panther Alley. This new safety regulation for Paschal, while enforced for a reason unknown to many, has started to cause mass chaos among students.
For example, many students do not even understand why this new rule has been enforced let alone why it runs the way it does. Ryan Taing, Paschal Senior, said “Having the back gate open would make the process much easier because traffic would flow easier. Ryan continued, “I don’t know why they have started doing all of this now.” Many students complain of how it takes much longer to leave the parking lot too. Caroline Gutierrez, Paschal Senior, cites, “I used to be able to get home in 10 minutes or less but now I don’t even leave the parking lot for 15 minutes.
Not only is the time and confusion of this new method bothering students, but many are concerned about crashes. All Paschal students are new drivers, some with licenses for a year and some for a week, but piling up eager teenagers who are hungry and aggravated and forcing them to leave through one exit causes a lot of stress for drivers, trying to navigate through a field of cars and students jay-walking.
With all of these concerns from students, I reached out to Ms. Jennifer Pate, Assistant Principal for Paschal, to try and get solutions on not only why this mandate went into effect and what it means for the future of Paschal.
Ms. Pate first commented on how the ID checks will continue on for the rest of the year. “The policy will remain in effect for the school year. The back gates will not be available for student use during the lunch periods.” She continued this by explaining how we as students and administrators can make this process easier, “In order to expedite the leaving process, students should turn right out of the lot onto Berry. Those attempting to turn left are causing a traffic jam. Also, students need to have their IDs ready when they get in their cars. This will also help speed things up.”
Not only did Ms. Pate comment on the pace and process of this new rule, but she was able to provide an explanation of why this rule has been put into place. Pate first starts off saying, “The reason for change- SAFETY! Those who are not eligible to leave campus (9th/10th grade) are getting into cars with upperclassmen or going out the back gates. Leaving campus as an upperclassman is a privilege and should be looked at as something students look forward to doing once they are eligible.”
Along with this, Pate explained, “Additionally, we can better monitor who is coming onto the PHS campus in vehicles. We have had numerous accounts of parents, visitors from the community, and students from other campuses entering through the back gates.” Pate included how this is not the rule for entering Paschal and can hinder the schools safety, and added, “The safety and security of our students is our #1 priority at Paschal. We will continue to monitor and adjust based on campus and student needs.”

I just don’t understand the real reason for these safety procedures, because since when has leaving school for lunch every been a safety issue? The ID checks are just a bit much and it’s causing students to actually resort to more dangerous tactics like stuffing kids in their trunks. It also takes forever for the seniors and juniors to leave the parking lot now and who wants to sit in the parking lot for an extra 15 minutes when they could be home by then. Also, for the sophomores and freshmen, most of the food chains that they go too are directly across from the school or are in close proximity of the school, and you can clearly see that they aren’t in danger.

They should be more worried about the 9&10 graders they still manage to get out during lunch time & the ones that drive should be able to leave whenever it’s time for the 11&12 graders to go to lunch. Gates should be open as well, because drivers need to get out and in whenever it is lunch time and the gates must be opened at all times.

Real.

Freshman and sophomores students still leave the campus but are more worried about the people driving. The rule is pointless and if it was for “safety reasons” why is paschal the only school doing it? or why don’t they take it to a school board meeting and make it a requirement for all schools?

From my understanding, Paschal High School is the only high school in the area that does this to students at lunch.

Ms. Pate claims that this is a safety issue yet there are a number of other issues on our campus that are not even spoken of. A stranger could easily walk into the building, there are drugs at this school and we still would like to focus only on the juniors and seniors that are allowed to leave for lunch. It makes no sense and has not happened in prior years and is only causing more issues. I believe that the juniors and seniors should be allowed to leave with no hassle and return to how it was before these ID checks.

Lunchtime for seniors is the only time some of us are able to eat all day. We don’t wake up in time, that’s normally what happens because you stayed up until 3am the night before doing homework, college essays, resumes, etc. Some of us even have too many club activities going on we have to use the excuse for the Go Center to simply try and sneak a snack. The ID checking makes sense in terms of safety of the students, but if we have two police cars and two APs normally checking IDs, why could we spread them out, 2 at each gate, the back panther alley gate as well as the berry gate. That would be an efficient change to the ID situation. Or maybe completely cut out the ID checks and instead tackling the problem that the sophomores were given Senior/Junior parking passes. So many more efficient solutions than how Paschal is running currently.

Why can’t we have someone at the back gate checking IDs along with the front gate that way students can get out faster.

When Ms.Pate claims this is a safety issue, there is no explanation. She goes on to claim this is privilege rather than going into detail as to how this keep students safe. She also claims “we can better monitor who is coming onto the PHS campus”, which does not correlate with this problem, the problem is them monitoring who is LEAVING campus. They have never checked my ID while entering campus. What stops a stranger from entering the campus? If a stranger is trying to leave the campus, that means they have already entered, which is the real safety issue. I also see kids jumping the fence with no monitor stopping them. But rather placing sticky notes on cars. A real fix to the problem could have been placed when the initial parking stickers were being sold, why did they give sophomores a senior/junior parking sticker? This appears that the students are now facing the repercussions of the schools lack of planning.

I would like to know if they plan on doing anything to get the line moving more smoothly so we waste less time.

slayed!

Is this a district rule or just a Paschal rule?
Anononononymous | Oct 3, 2022 at 11:54 am
But students can still walk off campus, so simply stopping driving students is either not important or not thorough enough. I also still don’t see why they can’t use more than one exit >:(

i think the id checking for students/cars leaving wasnt a good idea because people who have to return back after lunch are having their time wasted
eleiyah | Oct 3, 2022 at 11:53 am
was a good story, but i want more light on the safety issues?
Andi Shipman | Oct 3, 2022 at 11:52 am
Why are they checking the IDs of students leaving and not the IDs of people ENTERING the campus? Shouldn’t that be the focus?

Not only that, but lunch is shorter on C days so people have less time to get out and get in too.
