This past June, a group of 10 Paschal students took a trip to Africa for a service project through BuildOn. The 10 students included recent Paschal alumni Emily Buell, Kirsten Satz, Vishal Gottumukkala, Janie Pritchett, and Devon Nenon. Current seniors Justine Bollman, Jordan Newquist, and Donovan Hayes, and current junior and senior Grace Wimberly and Gigi Riddle. 

BuildOn is a national nonprofit organization that works in developing nations across the globe to end the cycle of poverty and illiteracy through education and service. Through work in Haiti, Nicaragua, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Malawi, and Nepal, BuildOn has built a total of 1,323 schools. The organization also works on the national level in some of America’s most struggling communities to assist the homeless, seniors, and children make a difference and find opportunities.

Throughout the school year, each person had to raise a certain amount of money to fund the whole trip. A total of $30,000 was raised to fund the school and in-country costs, not including flight prices. Through multiple bake sales, a car wash, a Zyn22 ride, and individual fundraising, all of the money was raised to solidify spots on the trip.

The trip lasted 10 days and the students stayed in the village and had host families. In the mornings, Paschal BuildOn worked on building the school, and in the evenings there were different cultural activities.
